Packer says career is not ‘over'
Contrary to what all college basketball fans pray, hope, and wish, Billy Packer said Tuesday he planned on staying at CBS for the foreseeable future. Packer has called the NCAA tournament for the last 34 years.
“I was talking to Jim (Nantz) after the championship game and he just told me I couldn't leave,” said Packer, who reminded everyone that he correctly stated the North Carolina-Kansas semifinal game was “over” with almost eight minutes left in the first half. “I owe it to the sports world to stay as long as I physically feel fine. And right now, I feel pretty darn good. It's not over for me.”
Packer has had a hate-hate relationship with fans dating back to his hiring in 1973. In fact, Packer said that's the way he likes it.
“That's fine because I'm not one of them,” said Packer. “I'm not a fan of sports so I could care less if they like me or not. I only need one person on my side and that's God. And believe you me, He and I are doing pretty well.”
